The Sheffield region has a long sporting heritage. For example in 1857, the world's first-ever official football club, Sheffield F.C. was formed here. Sheffield became the UK's first National City of Sport and is now home to the English Institute of Sport (EIS).
The Sheffield region is home to many professional sports teams in football, rugby, hockey, basketball and ice hockey, and also hosts national and international sporting championships.
It is therefore no surprise that a number of hi-tech sporting product companies have grown up in the Sheffield region, combining the region’s engineering and materials expertise with its sporting heritage. Companies include; Bromley Technologies (icesport products), HD Sports (ice skates), Planet X (racing and mountain bikes) and the Virgin Racing Formula One team.
