Environmental Technologies
Yorkshire is world-renowned for its strengths in the environmental technologies sector and is already home to leading companies in the field; the region continues to draw businesses from major multi-nationals to start-up enterprises. These companies from across the globe come to benefit from the region’s highly regarded research institutions, supportive research and development environment, and expertise built up from a heritage in related industries.
The Sheffield Region is home to many innovative research groups and environmental energy companies, using the region’s expertise in advanced manufacturing and metals to develop new environmental energy products.

The pioneering Sheffield-Siemens Wind Power Research Centre (S²WP), located at the Kroto Innovation Centre at the University of Sheffield will focus on developing the most reliable, innovative and efficient wind turbine generators that will be at the forefront of future onshore and offshore wind power systems.
The centre is the first of its kind in the UK and will specialise in providing the overall technology, architecture and design of onshore and offshore wind turbine generators, devices generating electrical energy from wind power, for the global market.
The growth of the off-shore wind industry on the north and south banks of the Humber means companies in the Sheffield Region are ideally placed to supply into the sector. These east coast deepwater ports are only 50 miles away by fast motorway routes.
The region also offers an ideal in-land location for companies wishing to supply not only the offshore wind industry in the Humber, but all the strategically important ports in the north of England.
